The two-day course focuses on the analysis of qualitative data, centering upon the computer package NUDIST 6. The course will be presented by Ann Lewins of the CAQDAS Networking Project at the University of Surrey.
The course will consist of two parts:
Friday morning, 28 November will be a free session that provides an overview of the different types of qualitative analysis software available, with demonstrations of up to five selected packages. This will be done in the context of participants' concerns about the planning for software use for research projects so that various 'tools' of qualitative software can be can be discussed from a variety of angles. You may have a basic understanding about what a CAQDAS software package will do, but the differences between what each package offers may be subtly but significantly different. During the session Ann Lewins will raise some of the issues you may need to consider, and how some of the software programs differ in the way they handle such aspects.
This session will take place in the Council Room at Queen’s University (located in the Main Lanyon Building above the Visitors’ Centre), beginning at 9.30am. While there will be no charge for this introductory session, you are advised to book in advance to be guaranteed a place.
Friday afternoon and Saturday morning and afternoon will be a ‘hands on’ workshop on the use of the qualitative data analysis package NUDIST 6.
NUDIST 6 is a significant (and much more user-friendly) upgrade to the popular NUDIST 4 with a number of improvements and totally new features. The workshop will feature exercises in the analysis of data drawn from genuine interviews and will cover practical topics such as: handling 'data', data organisation, closeness to data, coding and alternative ways of handling analysis, output/reporting, transportation of projects and teamwork logistics.
The first part of the workshop on day one will be in demonstration mode only – the maximum number of participants is 50, but places need to be booked. Due to the need for genuine interaction, the hands-on workshop on the second part of day one and on day two will be limited to a maximum of 15 participants and registration will be strictly on a ‘first come, first served’ basis. There must be a charge of £175 in order to cover the costs of the workshop. Payment can be either by a cheque made out to ‘Queen’s University, Belfast’ and sent to the address below or, for units within the University, by a cash transfer (contact Ms. Marie George at the address below for details on how to do this). Payment must be in advance but the School will issue a receipt and can provide a retrospective invoice if required. Registration is with Marie George in the School of Sociology and Social Policy (contact details below). If you require further information about the course, contact Dr. Robert Miller
