Big Telly Theatre Company’s 20th Birthday celebrations begin this year with John Murphy’s nostalgic classic The Country Boy.

Home is where the heart is and the grass is not always greener on the other side in this 1950’s tale of family tensions, disguised realities of an ‘American dream’ and the emotional bonds formed around hot soda bread in the cozy farm kitchen of an Irish country dwelling. This bittersweet family drama focuses on two brothers, Eddie (James Doran), living the American dream and Curly (Ruairi Tohill), stuck in the muck, working the family farm and fighting with his cantankerous father (award-winning John Hewitt). After fifteen years away, Eddie is drawn back to rural life, bringing his American wife Julia (international singer and actress Maria Tecce) back home to meet the folks and take younger brother Curly back with them, prompting a flurry of new curtains, posh napkins and panic. At first it seems that the former country boy is now a high flyer in the land of opportunity, but when layers are revealed maybe the grass turns out to be not so green.

This beautifully written and uplifting performance perfectly captures the comedy and heart-break of family life, and has much to say to anyone who’s ever thought about staying here, going away, or coming back. Breathe in that country air – it’ll do you good…
