Tension between employees and volunteers is the single greatest obstacle to the success of a volunteer programme. This workshop will examine this challenge to separate valid concerns from stereotypes and prejudices ...and then develop viable strategies for supporting teamwork. In this participatory session, the trainer will discuss topics that include:
- The inevitability of tension (and why it occurs)
- Myths versus facts in the perceptions of both sides
- Volunteer work design as a key element in productive and enjoyable relationships
- What the volunteer programme leader can and cannot do alone to encourage teamwork ...and what top administrators must do to lay the foundation for success
- What is unique about supervising volunteers as compared to paid employees
- Training paid staff to work with volunteers - and vice versa
- The hidden issue: How veteran volunteers treat newcomers
Delivered by: Susan Ellis, President of Energise, Inc. a training, consulting and publishing firm based in Philadelphia that specialises in volunteerism. She is the author of many books and articles on various volunteer management topics and co-publisher/editor of e-volunteerism: The Electronic Journal of the Volunteer Community.
