Increasingly the question of governance affects how organisations in the voluntary and community sector, and those moving into the social economy sector are led and managed. Funders, stakeholders and the community you represent are asking for greater assurance that your organisation is governed well. But how can you tell good governance from bad?

Often good governance is all about using your common sense. To help you deepen your understanding in this field we are delighted to invite you to hear from a range of speakers.

Sandara Kelso-Robb will introduce the topic, covering the roles and responsibilities for those involved in running your organisation, how you can manage risk and what systems and structures you need. To do this she will impart her own experiences from being a Board member, and share her knowledge of what funders need in order to have confidence in your governance systems.

You will also hear a case study of a well known social enterprise from two perspectives – first from the social enterprise manager and then from a Board member. This will help clarify the different roles and responsibilities each have within their organisation.

Enterprising Communities supports informal community groups and constituted bodies with no previous experience of the social economy in the Renewing Communities areas of North, South and East Belfast, Greater Shankill and Rathcoole until March 2008.

Enterprising Communities is supported by the Renewing Communities Action Plan, administered by Invest Northern Ireland. The programme is being delivered by Social Economy Belfast, a consortium of support organisations working in Belfast to build social business.
