Have you considered how you will handle extended staff absence due to the flight delays?
Organisations may choose to allow exceptional leave (paid), or ask staff to take either annual leave or unpaid leave.
From a legal view point, the employer is not obliged to pay staff who are unable to return to work after a period of annual leave. You may ask employees to use further annual leave or unpaid leave.
If the employee is stranded abroad while on company business, they should receive normal payment in line with their contract of employment. Employees would also be entitled to any accommodation, travel and normal expenses in line with their terms and conditions of employment.
NICVA’s policy will be to offer employees annual leave or unpaid leave. Depending on the length of time employees will have to take as unpaid or annual leave NICVA may allow them to average the unpaid leave over the year. This should soften the blow of losing a large amount out of pay out of one or two months’ salary.
