New Short Course in Social Media in the Third Sector

Social Media in the Third Sector (SMiTS)

The purpose of the Social Media in the Third Sector (SMiTS) short course is to provide participants with an introduction to contemporary social media practices and an understanding of how these can be strategically planned and operationalized to achieve the social objectives of third sector/social economy organisations.

Effective deployment of social media within this sector requires a specific set of skills and knowledge to enable the achievement of organisational goals. This course has, therefore, been designed for people engaging with and working within the third sector (such as employees, board members or volunteers) and those who aspire to work within the sector, be that in charities, social enterprises, community associations or other non-profit organisations.

This practically-focused module intends to provide its students with an opportunity to develop and apply important social media tools and techniques to support achievement of the strategic objectives and core functions of third sector organisations.  It will also provide students with an academic understanding and foundation of strategic marketing management and business development within the third sector and an appreciation of the complexities and challenges that implementing such a communication strategy can present within this context.

Key topics will include: Marketing, Introduction to Social Media, Strategic Value of Social Media to Third Sector organisations, Social Media Strategy and Operationalising Social Media. In addition, there will be opportunities for students to share experience and learning with their peers and draw upon the extensive resources within the Ulster University Business School.
