Piccolo Italian Evening

Join the Ulster Architectural Heritage Society as we indulge in the influence of Italian architecture in Belfast with an illustrated talk by Marcus Patton all served with a wholesome Italian supper, wine tasting and Neopolitan folk songs.

Join us and members of our Italian
community for a taste of La Dolce Vita in the heart of Belfast’s bustling
cultural quarter, appropriately just beside the area known as Little Italy.

The Black Box performance space and
café demonstrates how exciting new uses can be poured into old buildings.  Housed in a brewers’ warehouse, the venue is
tucked away on the narrow cobbled Hill Street, originally known as Pot-House
Lane.  Marcus Patton describes the listed
building in the UAHS publication Central
Belfast: A Historical Gazetteer:

“A two storey stucco warehouse with
a tall ground floor, stoutly built but with interesting detail.  The central carriageway entrance has
chevron-sheeted doors with ornamental hinges, and a large head in a garland of
roses on a keystone.’  It has ‘paired
windows with barley sugar columns under circular lights; the roundels between
windows contain a carved shamrock, thistle, eagle, rose and motif of three
barrels, emblematic of the various breweries whose wares were distributed from
here.”

Marcus Patton will give an
illustrated talk on the influence of Italian architecture in Belfast.  An architect, artist, historian, author and
musician, this Renaissance man is perfectly poised for the role.  We are delighted that Nick’s warehouse from
across the way will be organising a tasting of fine Italian wines.  Nick Price showed great faith in the area by
opening up his highly acclaimed restaurant in the 1980s, when the area had been
abandoned.  A simple Italian supper will
be served by Casa Nostra and we will round off this informal evening with a
rousing rendition of Neapolitan Folk Songs.
