Oska Bright, a unique film event, is brought to axis by Arts & Disability Ireland with support from The Arts Council and Dublin City Council.
Oska Bright is the first film festival anywhere in the world to be run by, and for, people with a learning disability. Now in its sixth year, the Oska Bright Film Festival will visit axis for the first time, presenting an enormous, exciting and inspiring range of short films including animations, documentaries, a soap-opera and western, all created by film-makers with learning disabilities - offering a unique look at a cultural minority using film to express their diversity and power.
June Hall, member of the Oska Bright steering committee, says
"We really enjoy running the festival and have learnt lots of new things. It's great to get the chance to be our own boss, to feel good about ourselves and to learn from each other. We know we can do this job as well as anybody else and the success of OSKA BRIGHT proves this."
The Oska Bright Film Festival is organised, managed and directed by a committee of learning disabled film makers and artists from the South East of England, UK. The steering group is trained and facilitated by Carousel and Junk TV. The Oska Bright Steering Committee have developed a new website www.oskabright.co.uk, which is an accessible resource that explains how to make a short film and has been made in a way that means it is accessible to people with a learning disability.
A highlight of Oska Brights visit to axis will be a public talk at 3pm, delivered by members of the Oska Bright committee. This session which will provide a rare insight into the workings of Oska Bright, an exemplar model of best practice, which will be of particular interest to those with a learning disability and non-disabled people interested in supporting people with learning disabilities to initiate and develop their own arts projects and events.
Oska Bright won the UK's National Lottery Good Causes Awards in 2008 - a great tribute to the pioneering work of the artists involved.
Oska Bright ON THE ROAD is a free public event but advance booking is necessary. All films will be subtitled in plain English, audio described and Sign Language interpreted. Each screening will show between 8-15 different films, with a total of 32 films being shown in 3 screenings over the course of the day, at 1pm, 2pm, and 4pm. So you can come to them all or pick and mix to suit yourself.
Be inspired - and maybe an Irish-made film will be an award winner in the 2011 Festival!
The screenings take place at axis, Main Street, Ballymun, Dublin 9. For bookings call (01) 883 2100 or email info@axis-ballymun.ie
