The course builds upon knowledge gained in the Substance Use Awareness/Effects of Drugs and Alcohol course. It looks at how to provide brief interventions with substance users. It is mapped to the Open College Network (OCN) level 3 unit 'Brief Interventions' within the 'Tackling Substance Misuse' qualification. There is a specific focus on the needs of homeless substance users. You will receive training in the following areas:

  • Supporting individuals when they have used substances
  • Identifying individuals who may benefit from brief interventions using a range of screening tools
  • Understanding and knowing how to deliver a range of harm reduction advice
  • Motivational interviewing, the stages of changing behaviour and goal setting
  • Supporting consenting individuals to reduce, or abstain from, substance use
