The Changing Places campaign
Standard disabled toilets do not meet the needs of all people with a disability - including 40,000 people with profound and multiple learning disabilities.
They need Changing Places toilets, with a hoist, changing bench and lots of space. Without them, people are forced to stay at home or to be changed on dirty toilet floors.
This is undignified, unhygienic and degrading.
That is why Mencap, together with the Changing Places Consortium, is campaigning for Changing Places toilets to be installed in all big public places. The Changing Places campaign was launched two years ago. Since then the number of Changing Places toilets has risen from 8 to over 80.
But there is still a long way to go.
To find out more about the campaign, you can visit the Changing Places website to:
- find your nearest Changing Places toilet
- find out how to install a Changing Places toilet in your venue
You can also share your experiences, ask questions and keep up to date with the latest campaign news on our online forum.
