The aim of this course is to demonstrate knowledge and skills in the safe practice of intravenous drug administration and injection therapy.

The Course will provide an opportunity for each participant to:

Component 1 

  • Review and develop their understanding of the anatomy and physiology of the human vascular system.
  • Review and develop their understanding of haemostasis and plasma biochemistry homeostasis.
  • Understand the anatomy and physiology of the venous structures that may be accessed for the IV administration of medicines.

Component 2

  • Understand the basic principles of pharmaceutics and pharmacotherapeutics.
  • Understand the specific pharmacotherapeutic principles relating to IV medicines.

Component 3

  • Understand the principles of microbiology and infection within the context of IV medication.
  • Discuss the pathobiology and management of infection specifically within the context of IV medication.
  • Describe the potential development and subsequent management of local vascular and generalised pathology associated with IV medication.

Component 4

  • Understand the Professional, Legal and Ethical concepts that relate to IV medications.

Component 5

  • Discuss the application of the components of the medication cycle within the context of IV medication.
  • Learn and enhance the practical skills associated with IV medication.
