Description

This course has been developed to provide housing staff with the knowledge to identify householders who are most at risk from fire, and to consider the options to reduce the risk of injury to the tenant and damage to the property from fire.

The half day course will examine fire safety legislation relating to HMOs in Northern Ireland, examine the responsibilities of landlords, managers and maintenance staff in respect of life safety systems and in the aftermath of the recent tragic Grenfell Tower fire, review the use of the ‘Stay Put’ policy in place within this housing sector.

More generally, this course will be of benefit to all those working in the housing sector as it provides an awareness of fire safety that can be applied to all domestic situations.

Learning Outcomes/objectives

By the end of the course you will:

  • Have an understanding of the legislative background of the HMO sector;
  • Identify the appropriateness of a ‘Stay Put’ policy within certain buildings;
  • Recognise who is most at risk from a fire in an HMO and the known contributory factors; and
  • Identify the most common causes of fire.

Any staff who regularly visit tenants in their own home.

Trainer Info

The course has been developed delivered by Kevin O’Neill (Belmore Fire Safety Services Ltd.) and Eamon Gallagher,in conjuction with CIH NI

Kevin and Eamon have over 50 years of fire safety knowledge between them and have previously both worked for Northern Ireland Fire & Rescue Service (NIFRS) for more than 30 years each. Kevin and Eamon have overseen fire safety guidance for many of the major building projects across Northern Ireland over the last 2 decades and have helped formulate legislative policy and guidance for the HMO sector. Both have worked on national groups feeding into revisions of British Standards and Approved Documents guidance and both have led on risk reduction strategies within NIFRS aimed at reducing fire calls, fire fatalities and the destruction of property from fire.
