Financing Residential Care

Advisers working with older people and people with disabilities will be aware that complex financial

issues often arise when a person enters a nursing home or residential care.  This course will cover

both entitlement to social security benefits for those in care and financial assistance from Health and

Social Care Trusts. It will also attempt to demystify the complicated rules regarding paying for residential

or nursing care.  Topics covered include:

• the treatment of property, land and other assets when assessing entitlement to financial assistance;
• the impact of disposal of assets on entitlement to financial help;
• calculation of entitlement to income support and social services financial assistance;
• respite care and affect on social security benefits;
• treatment of disability benefits when in residential care;
• role of appointees for people in residential care.
