Driving for work - Managing employee risk

Employers have clear duties under health and safety law to manage occupational road risk in the same way that they manage other health and safety risks. This resource provides clear advice on managing your organisation’s driver risk.

Since the introduction of the Corporate Manslaughter and Corporate Homicide Act on 6 April 2008 organisations need to be increasingly aware of their obligations under health and safety law.  This piece of legislation clarifies employers duties regarding managing the risk associated with driving for business purposes.  As a minimum organisations should be asking their employees who drive for work purposes if they have appropriate motor insurance which covers business travel and carrying out risk assessments with a special focus on those staff who drive regularly.  Employees should also be made aware of the dangers of using mobile phones and also hands free equipment whilst driving.

The ROSPA website has a section dedicated to work related driving and several useful documents attached below.  To find out more information about managing driver risk you can also go to the below link:

NICVA has also developed a Road Safety Appendix for the NICVA Health & safety handbook including a driver risk assessment form which is attached below for your reference.
