The reports of three ‘Value for Money ‘(VFM) audits into acute maternity services, residential homes for older people and intermediate care services have been published by the Department for Health, Social Service and Public Safety (DHSSPS)

The VFM audits are part of a DHSSPS programme to ensure that health services are effective and efficient and offer good value for money.

Action plans

Action plans have been drawn up by the DHSSPS with relevant input from health trusts and boards to address recommendations arising from the audits.

A spokesperson for the DHSSPS said: “The Department has been carrying out VFM studies of different areas of the health service for over ten years now. These studies have enabled us to identify ways of improving value for money and assisting relevant organisations to improve the services they provide.

“In addition, the audits provide us with independent information and assurance about economy, efficiency and effectiveness of areas of the health service where significant resources and expenditure are required.

Real improvements

“Last year, the Department revised its strategy for carrying out audits to ensure that it is targeting areas where real improvements can be made and that lessons learned are applied consistently across the health service.”
