Her Royal Highness Princess Alexandra has officially opened the Ulster Cancer Foundation’s Centre of Excellence, 40-44 Eglantine Avenue, Belfast.

HRH Princess Alexandra at the official opening of the charity’s £1.3m Centre of Excellence.
The Ulster Cancer Foundation (UCF) helps to ensure an enhanced quality of life for all those affected by cancer. The charity:
- provides care services,
- finances research for new and better treatments for cancer,
- undertakes cancer education and prevention programmes,
- carries out public campaigns, and
- plays an important advocacy role.
Services at the Centre of Excellence
The Centre of Excellence cost £1.3m to complete and was funded by the Building for Life Appeal. The Ulster Cancer Foundation’s Centre of Excellence provides the following services:
- Information and support helpline – the helpline (0800 783 3339) is staffed by a team of cancer information nurses who specialise in providing information, support and advice on a whole range of services for patients, their families or carers.
- Professional bra and swimwear fitting service for women who have had breast surgery. UCF’s free fitting service is provided on an individual and confidential basis in a sensitive and caring environment. Women can choose from a wide range of bras and swimwear and items can be purchased at cost price.
- Support Groups – UCF provide a range of 25 support groups for cancer patients and their families which meet on a regular basis at the new Centre and throughout Northern Ireland.
- Art Therapy – art therapy is a therapeutic technique that uses a range of materials for self-expression and reflection in the presence of a trained art therapist. It is available to all those affected by cancer and does not require any previous experience or skill in art. Art therapy is very beneficial as an aid to relaxation, managing stress and processing difficult emotions – all of which lead to a greater sense of well-being.
- Beauty for Life – The Beauty for Life workshops, in association with Clarins and Gordons Chemists, offers facials, manicures and make-up advice. These pampering sessions enhance confidence and self-esteem.
- Patient Resource Centre – offers a calming environment in which to speak with a cancer information nurse or to access the resource library which has up-to-date information on cancer. Internet access is also provided. The facilities are child-friendly and there is no need to make an appointment.
- Counselling – Specially trained counselors offer a confidential and free service for patients, their families or carers. This can be at the time of diagnosis, during treatment or when treatment has ended.
