Friends of the Earth Northern Ireland have taken the senseless lack of recycling at Belfast City Hall's Continental Market into their own hands.

Friends of the EarthWhy waste another week?

Belfast Friends of the Earth is spearheading a campaign to promote awareness about the lack of recycling at the City Hall's Continental Market. The group matters into their own hands on Thursday 14 December by reclaiming materials from the bins and transporting them to proper recycling facilities.

This was done to highlight the need for Belfast City Council to radically improve their approach to recycling issues and start treating our waste as a resource.

No recycling

At present there is no recycling available at the popular annual event, leading to concerns that the large volumes of waste being generated are adding unnecessarily to the pressure on local landfill sites. A local group member was informed that waste disposal from last year's market was tendered out at the cost of £6,000.

The group's co-ordinator Kathy McCann added,

While we appreciate the importance of the market's role to the city's Christmas festivities, we feel it is a shame that the Council has not taken a more active role in providing adequate facilities for the traders and the public to recycle their waste. Items such as cardboard and bottles are easily separable but there are no bins readily available to accommodate this. Many of the traders are from Germany and France where the quality of recycling is of a much higher standard. What sort of impression are we giving by our lack of positive action?

"With just under a week of the market remaining and the possibility of its return next year, we would strongly urge the Council to re-consider its policy on this problem in order to support a more environmentally friendly waste management system for our city."
