Education Minister, Maria Eagle, has announced the award of a £1.7 million contract to Contact Youth to provide counselling services in post primary schools across Northern Ireland.

Maria EagleMaria Eagle said: “It is vital that professional counselling services are available for young people in schools during difficult and vulnerable periods in their lives.

“This contract will provide that access and I am very pleased it has been awarded to Contact Youth, an organisation with 29 years youth counselling experience in Northern Ireland.

“The introduction of this service is part of the £100million Children and Young People’s Fund, announced by the Secretary of State earlier this year. The Fund is directing resources to where they are most needed in the lives of young people, helping ensure that they have the best opportunity for a brighter future through an enhanced quality of life.”

Under the terms of the contract, schools are grouped into eight regions and a counselling team will be based in each region. Counsellors will come into schools and pupils will have access to school based independent counselling support.

Schools will be given details of how the service will operate in coming weeks. The service will be phased in to be fully operational by January 2007.
