The Changing Aging Partnership has organised an Age Awareness Week to highlights issues of discrimination which affect older people to the rest of society.

Various activities will be undertaken during Age Awareness Week 2007 many of which are listed in this booklet.

Age Awareness Week Guide

This events guide details the types of events which will be held across Northern Ireland. Age Awareness Week will help highlight issues which affect older people, the discrimination they may be affected by and their own multiple-identities such as being an older woman, older disabled person or older member an ethnic minority.

European Year of Equal Opportunities

2007 has also been designated as European Year of Equal Opportunities for All and this year's Age Awareness Week is placed within the context of the European Year. This year's Age Awareness Week will run from Monday 1 October 2007 to the Friday 5 October 2007 and the theme is Respect, one of the key themes of the European Year 2007.

Promoting a more cohesive society

Action will be taken to raise awareness among the public and the people concerned to the importance of eradicating clichés, stereotypes and violence, and promoting good relations among all members of society. Age Awareness Week 2007 will strive to promote and disseminate the values underlying equal treatment and the fight against discrimination.

The core segments of the theme of Respect are:

  • Public Awareness Raising
  • Eradicating clichés
  • Eradicating Stereotypes
  • Eradicating Violence
  • Promoting Good relations
  • Promoting the values which underlie equal treatment and to
  • Promote the fight against discrimination

The overarching message of Age Awareness Week is that everyone has a part to play in developing a more cohesive society in which mutual respect exists.
