Continence - Breaking the Silence

The CAWT Continence Awareness and Support Project has recently launched a resources pack which is designed to help break down the barriers associated with continence issues and aims to highlight the support that is available in the North West.

For one in three of us continence is an issue and yet we are reluctant to discuss it. It is socially acceptable to talk about many other medical conditions which provoke great empathy – as they should - but incontinence is and remains a forbidden subject.

The recent launch of a cross border resources pack hopes to help break down the barriers associated with continence issues and also aims to highlight the support that is available in the North West. The project is funded by the European Union INTERREG IIIA programme.

Resources folder

The resources folder was produced as part of the Co-operation and Working Together (CAWT) Cross Border Continence Awareness and Support Project which seeks to tackle, on a cross border basis, the issues associated with continence problems such as:

  • the lack of awareness of support available,
  • avoidance in seeking help, and
  • misconceptions about causes of incontinence.

Project manager, Mary Murphy from the Western Health and Social Care Trust explained the rationale for the project. She said:

"We brought people together over a year ago at a cross border event so that they could put forward their ideas on how we could make it easier for people to access services. At this event it was highlighted that the taboo surrounding the issue of incontinence is so great that awareness and understanding of the treatments and services available to address them are low amongst both the general public and many health care professionals.

"So this resource was devised and developed so that people could more easily inform themselves of the services available and how to access them if necessary"
