Bike Week This is Bike Week 2003 - a national campaign to get us out of our cars, onto our bikes, and out on Northern Ireland’s National Cycle Routes (NCRs).

Sustrans - the sustainable transport charity – is coordinating a number of events across NI from 14 – 22 June to promote cycling and its benefits, in conjunction with the Roads Service Transportation Unit, Belfast City Council, the NI Civil Service Sports Association and DOE Road Safety branch. Not only is it cheap way to get around, but it’s good exercise and there’s no damage to the environment.

Bike to Work Day on 17 June is one of the main events of the Week. Commuters are being offeredthe incentive of free secure bike parking and cycling proficiency training in the grounds of City Hall as well as a free breakfast if they journey by bike.

Sustrans has published a number of route maps for NI, including the innovative publication Belfast by Bike which won the Information leaflet category at the 2003 SCOPE communications awards for the first edition of the guide to safer and more enjoyable urban cycling.

Here are a few of the events taking place in NI during Bike Week:

Pedalling Picnics – specifically targeted at novice and family cyclists that showcase the National Cycle Network and demonstrate how easy it is to reach local attractions by bike.

Bike to School – to encourage children and parents to travel safely to school. Held on 19 June. Includes cycle proficiency training before the day run by the Road Safety Division.

Rides in Northern Ireland – cycle rides of varyinglengths and difficulty leaving from different destinations across NI, includingthe Big Fish at the Queen Elizabeth Bridge on 17 June and the Foyle Valley Railway Museum on 21 June.

Border Trek - Ireland’s premier peace cycle and largest annual bike ride 14-15 June 2003 raising funds for Co-operation Ireland.
