UK Halifax staff (of HBOS plc) have raised £1.4 million for Macmillan Cancer Relief which will fund nine Macmillan nurses throughout the UK including one Breast Care Nurse at The Ulster Hospital.
Jacqui Nugent, who has been appointed to the post at the hospital in Dundonald, said, “I am really excited about the prospect of improving the quality of care and working with other health care professionals in a team to really make a difference to cancer patients ”.
Staff raised the sum by organising a company-wide raffle, an online auction, branch-to branch cycle rides and a trans-Atlantic row.
The HBOS Foundation, an independent charitable trust, then matched the sum £1 for £1, leading to the £1.4 million total.
It is estimated that one in three people will be diagnosed with cancer during their lifetime in the UK.
