Deciding who will look after your children while you are at work is one of the most important and often trickiest decisions parents can make.
Choosing childcare can almost be a job in itself. Working parents have two jobs and bringing up children can be challenging. Add busy work schedules and it becomes a real juggling act. Parents can feel like they are doing neither job well, and family life can suffer.
Plus, raising children is rewarding but not always on the household budget and the high cost of childcare can even deter parents from working. Some feel that they are working only to cover childcare costs.
Luckily, help is at hand. Local charity, Employers For Childcare has published a free Childcare Solutions guide for working parents.
The guide is packed full of practical advice and information on choosing childcare, including what options are available, quality pointers to look out for, where to find childcare, how to settle your child into childcare and how to adjust to being back at work.
The guide also looks at better ways to juggle:
work and familyand how to make the most of family time with information on employment rights, flexible working and employer supported childcare options, as well as tips on negotiating with your employer.
balance family and finances highlighting simple cost saving measures available to parents such as grants and saving on childcare costs, with childcare vouchers or tax credits.
Marie Marin, director of Employers For Childcare, explains the importance of the guide, "We hope the Childcare Solutions guide will be a valuable resource for both busy working parents and parents who are looking at returning to work. Daily calls to our freephone Childcare Advice and Information helpline indicate that childcare is a real issue for parents - lack of availability and high costs of childcare can even deter them from working. For parents to be focused and productive in the workplace they need to be content with their childcare choices. They also need to be able to find suitable and affordable childcare in the first place".
