A wide cross section of Newry and Mournes leading social enterprises attended the national social enterprise event of the year, VOICE 08 at the Liverpool Arena and Conference Centre on 26 February 2008, with the help of the Social Enterprise Newry & Mourne (SENAM) initiative.
During the conference the local social enterprises were able to attend interactive breakout sessions covering a wide range of topics relevant to the sector and to network with a wealth of social entrepreneurs sharing their know-how and experiences.
Pauline Coghlan, social enterprise advisor with Newry & Mourne Enterprise Agency said:
“The social challenges we face are huge and if there is going to be a real culture of mutuality and self help in Northern Ireland we need to change society’s attitude to the role of social enterprise. Visiting the VOICE 08 conference gave us an excellent opportunity to learn how social enterprises contributed to shaping a Cabinet Office of the Third Sector”
Pauline Coghlan and Maeve McParland from Newry & Mourne Enterprise Agency accompanied the group from the Newry & Mourne area to the conference under the SENAM initiative, together with staff from Social Economy Belfast. SENAM is a free programme of support for existing social enterprises in the Newry & Mourne area, consisting of mentoring support, a range of networking activities, best practice exchanges, and café conversations to raise awareness of the sector locally and regionally.
The initiative runs to June 2008 and is funded by the Local Strategy Partnership under the Peace II Extension Programme.
