The Falcon Senior Citizens Luncheon Club in Newry is a community based group set up in 1970 initially to provide a lunch for the elderly. However its dynamic volunteer membership, have continued to expand on this and organise various innovative activities for its members, such as bingo, flower arranging, taichi, dancing and reminiscing.
They will now introduce Boccia to its members as evidence has shown participation in such activities can enhance the quality of older peoples lives.
Pauline Coghlan of Newry & Mourne Enterprise Agency, mentoring the Falcon Club under the Invest NI Social Entrepreneurship Programme stated:
"One of the great attractions of Boccia is that the game is played from a seated position, it can be played by or against men, women, young or old, those with or without a disability – making it almost unique and certainly a true sport for all.
"The sport, which can be played from a seated position, is particularly suitable for those with a disability as it is a non contact target driven sport which relies on skill, rather than size strength or speed and gives those involved the opportunity to develop new skills."
Angela Donnelly Club Secretary siad:
"The plan to start Boccia for the members of the club was just an idea without funding, so you can imagine how delighted we are that O2’s ‘It’s Your Community’ is supporting our Boccia training”.
The Falcon club hope to ready to take part in friendly bowling tournaments with other clubs from the area in the very near future.
Each month up to 60 projects throughout the UK receive up to £1000 of It’s Your Community funding. Awards must be for the benefit of the community or to build community spirit.
