The WEA and Belfast City Council are placing creativity at the core of the city’s future.

If the answer is yes, Belfast City Council and the WEA have the programme for you. We are offering a short, accessible programme aptly named ‘Creativity Thirst’ to help anyone who is considering self employment or gaining additional income in the Creative Industries develop the necessary skills.

Who can apply?

The programme, which is backed by the Creative and Culture Skill Sector and accredited to the Open College Network Northern Ireland, is free and will commence in September.

Anyone with a level 2 qualification or above in their skill area living in the Belfast area and who is considering self employment or gaining additional income in the Creative Industries is welcome to apply.

Skills can include:

  • music,
  • film,
  • photography,
  • textiles,
  • craft, and
  • digital imaging.

What does the course cover?

Participants can complete a total of three units on offer. All sessions have been scheduled outside office hours to allow maximum accessibility. An additional four taster sessions will also take place across Belfast during October. Further information about these will be made available on the WEA website.

Councillor Michael Browne, Chairman of Belfast City Council’s Economic Development sub-committee explains the importance of the programme:

"This project is unique in that it has been developed to address the gap in business start-up readiness at entry level in the creative sector.

"The main aim of the programme is to enable those thinking of starting their own business in the creative sector to develop a full business plan, a portfolio and promotional material through the use of specialised mentors relevant to their business idea."

WEA Director, Stevie Johnston commented:

"The WEA sees creativity as being central to the social, economic and cultural development of Northern Ireland.

The Creative Industries are also one of the fundamental strands of the WEA and we are delighted to be working in partnership with Belfast City Council in placing creativity at the core of the city’s future.”
