Eamonn Holmes spells it out

Mencap In Northern Ireland Small Logo

TV Personality, Eamonn Holmes is encouraging local schools throughout Northern Ireland to get involved in Spellathon to raise money for local Mencap projects.

What is Spellathon?

Spellathon is a sponsored spelling test, containing words drawn up by Mencap and the Oxford University Press; designed to be fun for pupils, simple for teachers to organise and ties in well with the curriculum. Spellathon encourages pupils to learn words targeted specifically to their ability levels with the added incentive of raising money for a good cause.

There are 3 good reasons to get involved!

Curriculum Related - Mencap has worked with Oxford University Press in putting together spelling lists that cover all levels of literacy. Taking part in Spellathon as well as improving essential literacy skills will give school children an introduction to Mencap and what it means to have a learning disability.

Its easy - Once registered you will be sent a teacher friendly Spellathon pack which will include an easy to follow lesson plan, list of spellings that can be photocopied, sample press release, sponsorship forms and a letter to parents. Spellathon can be carried out as a whole school, year group or a class event at any time of the school year.

Your school can benefit too! If you choose 25% of the total sponsorship raised by the pupils can go back to the school. Once you have collected all the sponsorship, simply retain 25% for the school and send the remainder to Mencap Northern Ireland. They work with people with a learning disability and their families and carers, fighting to end discrimination and prejudice, and providing a wide range of quality services here in Northern Ireland.
