Interesting New Developments Announced for MS sufferers.

The MS Society, NI is pleased to announce that a licence has been approved for the use of the drug Tysabri for treatment of people with highly active relapsing remitting MS.

Kieran Harris, Director has stated

It would appear that Tysabri will be used for people who have not responded to treatment with the existing disease modifying therapies or for those with rapidly progressing, severe relapsing remitting MS. We await news from the National Institute of Clinical Excellence (NICE) as to whether Tysabri will be given ‘fast track’ approval in the UK. At present the drug can be prescribed by neurologists depending on the type of MS and local funding. Anyone needing more information on this should contact their neurologist.

It has also been announced that people with progressive MS are being recruited as part of a clinical study (the CUPID trial) to determine whether a certain chemical component of cannabis, THC, will have a long-term affect on the progression of disability.

Robert McConnell from the MS Society, NI stated

We are pleased that people with the more progressive form of MS are being recruited for the CUPID study. This is a UK wide trial involving 500 people from a total of 30 centres. We hope that people with progressive MS in Northern Ireland will be included in this important clinical study.
