Davy, who is a Temporary Crew Commander with the Northern Ireland Fire & Rescue Service, completed a Facilitative Leadership course with the Workers' Educational Association (WEA).

The course which was accredited to the ILM is designed to draw a clear connection between leadership and collaboration. He was nominated for the award by his WEA tutor Maura Kavanagh who was impressed by his motivation and enthusiasm.

It's a great honour to receive the ILM Learner of the Year Award 2007. I completed my Facilitative Leadership course through the Workers' Educational Association and their course delivery and support throughout was excellent, they particuarly understood the challenges of combining full time work with study and made sure that my learning experience with them was an enjoyable one.

NIFRS Area Commander Jim McCallum, who is head of training at NIFRS, stated

We are delighted that Davy's hard work and success in excelling in his Facilitative Leadership course was recognised by the ILM. NIFRS invests in ongoing training and lifelong learning for staff throughout their careers and we have worked closely with the WEA in recent years to provide a range of non-vocational skills courses which help develop our people and ultimately help provide a better fire and rescue service to the people of Northern Ireland.

David was particularly strong in contextualising his learning on the Facilitative Leadership Level 2 Endorsed Award course with a clear focus on the specific problems he wanted to address. Throughout the course David was positive, self aware and challenging of himself. He motivated and encouraged other members of the class and was an asset to the course. David used the tools he had learnt on the course to resolve conflict at operational incidents and to develop his facilitative skills to accommodate all sections of the community in relation to fire safety

Commenting on Davy's achievement Aideen McGinley, Permanent Secretary for DEL said

I am delighted that Davy has won this prestigious national award. The development of leadership skills plays an important contribution in helping sustain the growing prosperity of Northern Ireland, including the quality of its public services. The Department of Employment and Learning is delighted to have been associated with the WEA in delivering this respected qualification

Speaking at the presentation WEA Director, Stevie Johnston, commented

We are absolutely delighted that a WEA learner has won this national award. It is recognition of Davy's hard work and effort and is evidence of the excellent level of service provided by the WEA.
