1. Health Protection Unit

  • To carry out research development into colorectoral screening.

2. Disability and Mental Health Unit

  • Mental health.
  • Learning disability.
  • Physical and sensory disability.
  • Children and adolescents health.

3. Secondary Care Directorate

  • To oversee the identification and establishment of eight flagship managed clinical networks.
  • To finalise the revised policy for the provision of fertility services in Northern Ireland.
  • To take forward in a timely and effective manner the revision of the department's Stroke Strategy.
  • To promote organ donation services in Northern Ireland, consistent with ensuring that an adequate supply of organs are available for transplantation.

4. Child Care Policy Directorate

  • Child protection.
  • Looked after children.
  • Leaving and after care.
  • Adoption.
  • Foster care.

5. Investing for Health Unit

  • To improve the mental and emotional health of the population particularly among young people.
  • To improve the sexual health of the population particularly among young people.

6. Family Policy Unit

  • To improve health by supporting parents in caring for children and promoting children's health and development.
  • To improve the ability to learn by encouraging stimulating play, improving language skills, and the early identification and support of children with learning difficulties.
  • To improve social development by supporting the development if early relationships between parents and children, good parenting skill, family functioning, and early identification and support of children with emotional, learning and behavioural difficulties.
  • To empower and skill parents as parents.

7. Elderly and Community Care Unit

  • To develop domiciliary, day and respite services to enable older people to live in their own homes wherever possible.
  • To expand and modernise services for older people that prevent unnecessary hospital admission, promote faster recovery from illness, support timely discharge from hospital and maximise independent living.

8. Drugs and Alcohol Strategy Team

  • To develop a skilled competent workforce in Northern Ireland across all sectors that can identify and respond to children (and unborn children) at risk from alcohol and drug related harm in a manner that will support the recommendations of the report on Hidden Harm (June 2003). 9. Domestic Violence Unit

  • To improve services and support for the victims of domestic violence.
  • To develop and deliver a high quality, coordinate multi-agency response to domestic violence.
