Junior Minister Jeffrey Donaldson has urged older people to put forward their views on the role and powers of a Commissioner for Older People.

He was speaking at the first Senior Citizens’ Convention at the Grove Health and Wellbeing Centre organised by Belfast City Council.

Mr Donaldson told the audience:

As part of the consultation on a Commissioner for older people, we will be organising a number of public events across Northern Ireland at which you will be able to give your views on the role and powers of a Commissioner.

“While the dates and venues of these events have yet to be finalised, details will be advertised and I would encourage as many people as possible to attend.”

Last week, advertisements were placed in the local press for an Older People’s Advocate who will ensure older people’s issues are raised until legislation is in place to facilitate the appointment of a Commissioner.

Mr Donaldson added:“The Executive is committed to improving the lives of all our citizens and as Junior Ministers with specific responsibility for older people, Minister Gerry Kelly and myself welcome this event and commend Belfast City Council for their work in seeking to ensure that older people are not ignored or marginalised on issues which affect their quality of life.

“Our senior citizens must be afforded the same opportunities in life as the rest of us. Opportunities for decent housing, good health care, further education and leisure facilities,” he told the audience.

In reiterating the commitment to appoint a Commissioner for Older People Mr Donaldson indicated it was the Junior Ministers’ desire to ensure best value for money from any arrangements.
