Northern Ireland’s 999 Emergency Services have teamed up to collectively raise money for one local charity in 2008 - the Northern Ireland Cancer Fund for Children. They're part way through a huge fundraising campaign this year in a combined effort to help in developing a new cancer support service.

999 Partnership logoThe 999 Partnership sees a commitment by the 4 emergency services to raise as much money as possible for their chosen charity, Northern Ireland Cancer Fund for Children (NICFC).

Northern Ireland Cancer Fund for Children offers practical, emotional and financial support to children and young people up to the age of 21, and their families, who are living with cancer and was chosen as the Emergency Services Joint Charity of the Year 2008 by staff from the four organisations.

A huge fundraising campaign is taking place throughout 2008 with police, fire, ambulance and coastguard staff organising their own fundraising events and then combining their efforts for a number of joint fundraising events planned across Northern Ireland.

All funds raised will be used by NICFC to develop a first of its kind new cancer support service for children and young people who have a parent living with cancer, as well as help finance the purchase of a property to extend the NICFC Shimna Valley Retreat in Newcastle, Co. Down.

Gillian Creevy, General Manager, Northern Ireland Cancer Fund for Children, said:

“We are absolutely delighted to have been chosen as the 999 Emergency Services Charity of the Year for 2008. This is a fantastic opportunity for us to benefit from the collective fundraising effort of police, fire, ambulance and coastguard staff. These organisations have an excellent reputation for their local fundraising efforts and we are very excited to be working with them to help maximize the fundraising potential and raise our Charity’s profile and the service we provide for children and young people in Northern Ireland living with cancer."

Upcoming events include:

24 May - an abseiling event at the Europa Hotel, Belfast

12 June - a 'Daisy Chain' around Parliament Buildings at Stormont. The daisy is the charity's logo. This event seeks to involve primary school children from across Northern Ireland. "We are hoping that as many primary schools as possible will help create one huge daisy chain. The chain will surround Parliament Buildings at Stormont, which measures approximately 348 meters. Each school will be asked to bring along a specific measured section of the chain for which they will have raised sponsorship. In order to make attendance and representation by the schools easy, we request that a maximum of five representatives from each school attend, ie to include teachers and pupils."

27 June - Schools/Youth groups 'ALP' challenge at the Belfast Activity Centre. The Adventure Learning Park (ALP) is comprised of 200 meters of man-made cave, extensive climbing surface and a range of 'high-up' challenges, from a ropes course to a vertical assault course. This brand new state of the art facility was funded by the Big Lottery Fund and is based in the heart of Barnett's Stable Yard in Belfast. The combination of activities, stand-alone team games and initiative tasks ensure that groups of all ages and abilities are kept intrigued! BAC promotes educational techniques to encourage learning by doing. Activities are hands on and allow participants to think through problems and try new ideas in a supportive and safe environment and to push their personal perceived boundaries, both physically and mentally. The challenge takes place on the last Friday in June. Teams will consist of 6 and each will be required to raise sponsorship to participate.
