A challenge for armchair artists

Voluntary Arts Ireland is all set for International TV Turnoff Week. This week, we will be spending our time working with and to support people to create their own entertainment.

Phil, Bryony and Janie, our Arts Learning Links Officers, will be meeting with local arts and crafts groups - from drama to crafts - to help them get their activities up and running in the best possible way.

Pauline, our young arts creativity co-ordinator, will be working with young people to make sure they have the skills to get together and create a space to do the artforms of their choice.

I’ll be at a conference which involves talking about taking part in art in three languages at Theatr Felinfach in West Wales for most of the week, so not much chance of watching TV for me either (and for those who receive our e-news, it will be a little late).

And in the meantime we’ll be attending band practice, choir practice, writing and art workshops, festival committee meetings: and if there is time we are hoping to attend a performance at the local arts centre as well.

If I’m honest this isn’t all that much different from our other weeks. “Actually” says Brenda, our chief officer, “I don’t watch that much television anyway.”

So this is our challenge to armchair artists - instead of watching, take part. Find people who share your interest, or even found your own group.
