The Northern Ireland award of 'Volunteer of the Year' went to Brian McGleenon of Armagh; a 28 year-old teacher, recently returned to the Province from London.
Brian, an able film-maker, has lent his film-making skills to Woodland Trust events, including 'The Magic of Trees'; a special week-long children's conference attended by more than 400 primary school children earlier this year. Artists worked alongside the children to encourage an appreciation of trees and nature using the creative energy of poetry, storytelling, photography, film-making and music.
With a helping hand from brother David McGleenon, editor, and friend Myles O'Neill, cameraman, the team ran a number of film-making workshops, and also filmed the children's activities to produce a short documentary. You can see a sample of their work at www.naturedetectives.org.uk/magic.
"We hired some equipment and there was a lot of organising but it was well worth it. I've fond memories of planting trees myself - as a teenager. And now, as a father, I'm very aware of the importance of trees and the environment to our future generations," said Brian.
Brian was nominated by Rosanna Ballentine of the Woodland Trust, who said:
The Woodland Trust relies upon the support of all our volunteers. We are delighted to have the chance to acknowledge Brian's efforts and expertise. He is a creative and talented film-maker, who has graciously given up his free time to help out. To a charity, such support is invaluable."
Established in 1972, the Woodland Trust now has over 1,000 sites in its care, covering approximately 20,000 hectares (50,000 acres). Access to its sites is free. Further news can be found at www.woodlandtrust.org.uk. Here in Northern Ireland the Woodland Trust cares for 52 woods.
