This is a middle management post, the key purpose of which will be to help forge and develop links with Local Government and support the government’s implementation of the NI Sustainable Development Strategy (SDS). This is an extremely exciting time, with both the increased public profile for sustainable development following the recent launch of the SDS and the ongoing Review of Public Administration. The opportunity exists to make a major impact on the way Sustainable Development is delivered in both the Local Government and public sphere.

The post is funded jointly by the Department of the Environment, Local Government and Sustainable Northern Ireland. At least two years experience is required in a field related to sustainable development preferably within local government in Northern Ireland. The successful candidate will be based in Belfast however travel outside of Belfast is anticipated and therefore applicants will require access to a suitable means of transport.

Each of the funding bodies has identified specific areas of work for this post:

Department of the Environment:

  1. To provide immediate and relevant expertise in relation to the objectives of the NI Sustainable Development Strategy and to support the development of the associated Implementation Plan.
  2. To raise awareness of and promote sustainable development in general and the key issues for NI in particular; and to provide a source of information and lobby where appropriate.

Local Government (NILGA):

  1. To support local government in the development and delivery of their Sustainable Development implementation plans.
  2. To support the work of the Local Government Modernisation Task Force in regard to community planning.

Sustainable Northern Ireland:

  1. To manage Sustainable Northern Ireland and its projects and develop options for its future work.
