Job title: Outreach worker.
Location: Community based. To cover Western area of N Ireland co-terminus with Western Education and Library Board's and Southern Education and Library Board's broad areas.
Reporting to: Communications and Lobbying Manager.
Member of: Communications and Lobbying team
Key purpose:Raise awareness of integrated education among a range of stakeholders (parents, pupils, teachers, governors, policy makers and politicians) in designated local areas. Nurture any interest that is expressed in integrated education through new build or transformation. To contribute local knowledge to the development of policies and strategies on integrated education.
Main duties:
- Initiate and maintain links with community groups private, public and voluntary organisations in the designated local area; - Use a variety of marketing strategies (leafleting, presentations, home visits etc) to promote integrated education; - Develop contacts and relationships with local media;
- Recruit interested people as volunteer marketers to spread information in the community;
- Provide support to existing parent steering groups; - Identify and nurture potential parent groups and work with NICIE development team to launch groups; - Input to the Communications and Lobbying Team's strategy on school development; - Liaise with existing integrated schools as part of an agreed strategy; - Compile promotional stories and photographs for use by the Communications and Lobbying Team; - Source on-the-ground information for the Communications and Lobbying Team particularly the Policy Analyst; - Identify schools that might consider transformation; - Assist in the implementation of any agreed transformation strategy such as taking a lead role in road show or talks to local groups; - Identify people within the community; who could become candidates for School Boards; - Establish relations with local Church, Voluntary and Community sector personnel; - Update local Councillors on developments in integrated education using material supplied by the Policy Analyst and lobbyists; - Develop relationships with local Education and Library Boards.
Essential criteria:
- At least three years' relevant experience in the past five years ; - Established contacts in the designated community; - Ability to initiate links and establish networks in the community; - Experience of setting up and working with groups or teams; - Ability to handle sensitive issues; - Experience of promotional work to raise awareness of a product or service; - Experience in public speaking; - Experience of working with local media; - Committed to integrated education; - Knowledge of cross-community and inter-community issues in the region; - Excellent verbal and non-verbal communications skills; - Excellent organisational skills; - IT skills; - Ability to work independently and as a member of the Communications and Lobbying Team; - Ability to work flexible hours; - Ability and willingness to travel widely and efficiently in the assigned region;
Desirable criteria:
- A recognised qualification in marketing ,community work and/or communications; - Experience of working from home or office remote from head quarters.
Terms and Conditions applicable
Salary range: NJC Scale points 28-31 £21,654 - £24,000 .
Essential car user's allowance and pension contributions
Holiday entitlements: 22 days rising to 25 days plus 11 Statutory holidays
Type of post: This is a fixed term appointment for 36 months.
