The Secret Garden
The Secret Garden is a community business supported by Praxis Care Group, based at the five acre walled garden at Hillsborough Castle which has been restored following the suggestion of the then Secretary of State, Dr Mo Mowlam, that a voluntary organisation involved with the unemployed / disabled be given the opportunity to reclaim the site. The Garden works to provide vocational rehabilitation and personal development programmes for people with learning disability and acquired brain injury, to develop and provide a range of Secret Garden products and services, and to develop the walled garden site at Hillsborough Castle.
Volunteer Role
We are looking for people to become volunteer members of the horticulture team as they work with people with learning disability and / or acquired brain injury. Tasks would include preparing seedbeds for vegetable and fruit crops, sowing and maintaining crops, harvesting, planting and potting, and preparing crops for sale. All within the context of the rehabilitation and personal development programmes. We invite individuals and pairs to apply, as volunteers could work in pairs.
General Information
This voluntary post is a Millennium Volunteer opportunity for people aged 18 – 24 years, who can volunteer for four plus hours a week. The actual working hours will be agreed with the volunteer and staff. Full training is given, and expenses are paid for travel and subsistence.
