CIVICUS is a global alliance of civil society organisations with members in over one hundred countries all over the world. CIVICUS works with its members and a rapidly growing network of partners at both national and global levels to promote and strengthen civil society globally.

As one of its major programs, CIVICUS is undertaking the CIVICUS Civil Society Index (CSI). The CSI is an international action-research initiative, which provides civil society stakeholders with a diagnostic tool for assessing the current state of civil society on a country level and creating a basis for dialogue, joint reflection and action. CIVICUS is currently coordinating the CSI implementation in more than 50 countries around the world. This phase of the project will come to completion in mid-2006.

CIVICUS is recruiting a successor to the current CSI Project Manager, to take the lead in the evaluation, redesign and subsequent implementation of the CSI in 2006 and beyond. The position is based at the CIVICUS head office in Johannesburg, South Africa.

Specific Responsibilities

  1. Ensure a comprehensive evaluation of the CSI implementation phase 2003-06;
  2. Oversee the redesign of the project's institutional setup, implementation approach and methodology, based on the results of the evaluation;
  3. Develop and implement an effective fundraising strategy for the project;
  4. Oversee and guide the work of other members of the CSI team;
  5. Liaise with donors, including grant proposal development and grant reporting and
  6. Ensure the effective promotion of the project among CIVICUS members, other interested parties and the general public.

Requirements:

  1. Proven track record of at least five years in managing social development or social research projects;
  2. Solid knowledge in the field of applied social research;
  3. Indepth understanding of civil society and its environment, at the global and national levels;
  4. Experience in coordinating multi-country projects;
  5. Experience resource mobilization and managing relationships with donors;
  6. Substantive knowledge in project monitoring & evaluation;
  7. Experience of working in a multicultural environment;
  8. Excellent written and oral communication skills in English;
  9. First-rate staff management and leadership skills;
  10. Strong ability to develop plans and strategies and to work toward their realization and improvement under trying conditions and demanding performance schedules; and
  11. An advanced degree in an appropriate discipline, preferably development studies or social sciences.
