Daryl scoops award

Diana, Princess of Wales Memorial Award for Young People Small Logo

Daryl Carson from Kilkeel High School, Newry. Winner of a Diana, Princess of Wales Memorial Award for Young People.

Daryl CarsonDaryl is a young carer for his mother, who is severely disabled by MS and is registered blind.

He has demonstrated selfless service and long term commitment, with a positive attitude and a cheerful disposition. He has never once been heard to complain.

The sheer number of activities Daryl carries out makes his achievement an outstanding one. He helps his mum by cleaning out and laying the fire, shops, does the washing and ironing and collects her benefits for her at the post office.

Daryl’s daily support is particularly important for his mum, as they have no extended family locally. He has been a young carer since primary school. He is unassuming, copes well with his schoolwork, plays for the rugby team and is never without a droll sense of humour.
