Reclaim the Night is a UK wide organisation which seeks to draw attention to the increasing levels of violent / sexual assaults against women on our streets. Reclaim the Night believes much more needs to be done to tackle violence against women, most importantly addressing the appallingly poor conviction rate for rape and serious sexual assaults throughout the UK. The national average conviction rate is 5%; sadly in Northern Ireland the figure is as low as 3%.
The procession in Belfast will coincide with a similar event in London, in which 1500 women participated last year. It should be noted that while the vigil will be lead by women only, although male supporters are more than welcome.
Please spare an hour or so to attend and protest both the unacceptable levels of violence against women on our streets, and the current legal frameworks which fail to punish the vast majority of those responsible for ruining the lives of so many women.
If you would like to attend please contact Anne at the UNISON Office - a.campbell2@unison.co.uk.
