Mark Lynas, well known 'Green' campaigner, will give a public lecture on his book ‘Six Degrees – Our Future on a Hotter Planet’ where he will take the audience through likely climate scenarios, degree by degree. This highly esteemed author, journalist and broadcaster has been invited by the British Council and the Institute of Civil Engineers (ICE) to speak on what a hotter planet means for humanity.
Mark Lynas is well known for his views on global warming and the role air travel plays, arguing that air travel is in the front line of the climate change debate. Writing in his new book he suggests:
"The Arctic Ocean ice cap will probably now disappear whatever we do to greenhouse gas emissions. The models generally suggest an ice-free Arctic by 2080, but my guess at the time of writing – based on the evidence of very rapid rates of change in the real world (a sixth of the whole ice cap disappeared last summer, for instance) was that this was too conservative.”
The free event will take place at the Waterfront Hall on Monday 8th October at 6pm, when there is also the opportunity to view NorthSouthEastWest. This photographic exhibition on climate change aims to increase public understanding of global climate change by demonstrating the challenges facing the world resulting from the activities of mankind.
Created by the British Council in partnership with the Climate Group, the images by the award winning Magnum photographic agency show the effects of climate change but also illustrate some of the policy and physical responses helping to reduce carbon emissions.
