The CIH Northern Ireland is hosting a half Spring Conference on 'Developer Contribution in Housing: Panacea or Pandora's Box?' on 9 April 2008 at the Stormont Hotel, Belfast. This major conference will consider how to maximise the contributions of the planning system to the delivery of affordable housing in Northern Ireland.
The review into Affordable Housing proposed developer contribution as a potential solution to the lack of affordable and social housing in Northern Ireland. With the Department for the Environment taking responsibility for
relevant planning policies, this is a timely opportunity to debate this critical issue.issue.
This major conference will consider how to maximise the contributions of the planning system to the delivery of affordable housing in Northern Ireland. It will seek to answer questions such as
- How feasible are developer contributions in the present housing and planning context?
- Are they the best way to ensure delivery of the numbers of new social and affordable homes we need?
- Will they have a disproportionately negative effect on private development?
- Can they deliver the scale of affordable and social housing needed?
- How can we learn lessons from other jurisdictions to ensure that any approach to developer contribution is effective and yields new homes?
- How do we deal with the practical issues, such as the level of contribution,and management of the process?
The Conference will also include the launch of the Northern Ireland Housing Executive Housing Market Review.
This conference will be of special interest to all housing organisations, developers, planners, planning consultants, political representatives, lawyers, architects and quantity surveyors. In short, anyone with an interest in the provision of social and affordable housing should attend
