The "Uniting Against Elder Abuse" partnership is a Comic Relief funded programme which brings together a Consortium of organisations working jointly to address the issue of Elder Abuse in Northern Ireland:

  • Action on Elder Abuse,
  • Age Concern Northern Ireland,
  • Alzheimer's Society,
  • Carers NI,
  • Help the Aged in Northern Ireland and
  • Women's Aid.

How big a problem is elder abuse?

Research on behalf of Help the Aged in Northern Ireland in 2006 found that 35% of the public had never even heard the term Elder Abuse yet research has also shown that 88% of the public are concerned about the issue when made aware of it.

The Uniting Against Elder Abuse programme will:

  • raise awareness of the problem of the elder abuse
  • provide access to independent advocacy
  • develop a therapeutic response to support those who experience abuse, and
  • provide education for independent carer providers in Northern Ireland.
