Disability Action has recently received funding from the Electoral Commission to run a three year project called Count Us In.

The launch of the project will take place on 1 March 2007 in the Wellington Park Hotel, Belfast. The event is open to anyone interested and representatives from politicial parties will be there so disabled people can question them on policy ahead of the upcoming election.

  • Increase disabled people’s awareness of the democratic process
  • Increase the political participation of disabled people in Northern Ireland
  • Enhance the skills and confidence of disabled people in playing a more active role in the electoral / decision making process

Disability Action will be delivering this in a number of ways:

  • Development and delivery of a capacity building programme looking at all aspects of the democratic process in Northern Ireland
  • Setting up and facilitating seven Disability Working Groups - one in each of the proposed new council areas
  • Delivering a number of awareness-raising events throughout the three years of the project
