Trócaire will hold a public talk on Gender Equality as part of its 2007 Lenten Campaign on 1 March, 2007 from 7.00pm to 9.00pm in the Linenhall Library, Belfast.
Guest Speakers Dr Mona ElFarra (Occupied Palestinian Territories) and Scholastique Harushiyakira (Burundi) will address the theme of ‘Helping Protect Women and Children In Conflict’
Dr Mona is a physician and women’s rights activist in Gaza City and Scholastique co-ordinates the Burundian women’s network ‘Dushirahamwe’ (or ‘Let’s Reconcile’). Both women are associated with Trócaire’s development work in their respective countries.
During Lent, Trócaire is raising awareness about the need for fuller implementation of UN Security Council Resolution 1325- a resolution passed in 2000 which calls on world governments to protect women and children in conflict, to prevent violence against women and to increase women’s participation in peace processes.
