Sustainable Development Study Tour to Freiburg, Germany - 23 to 27 October 2006
Call for Applications
As outlined within the NI Sustainable Development Strategy a key objective is to make NI a leading player in the development of renewables technology. Over recent years Frieburg in Germany has assumed such a position and consequently provides a good model to emulate, especially as the growth has been fuelled by the private sector, and not by government.
Concordia, the social partnership body for NI, is organising and funding a study tour to Freiburg to examine best practice in the area of ‘sustainable development.’
In particular, the study tour will examine how environmental activities within Freiburg’s private sector are managed, will involve a practical study looking at the city’s new housing areas, will include a review of Freiburg’s planning and urban development policies from an innercity development perspective, will examine a number of alternative agricultural initiatives and will also look at Freiburg’s transport and mobility infrastructure.
Given that Freiburg is often referred to as the “environmental capital of Germany”, it is hoped that participants will develop a more sympathetic response to the calls for more sustainable development in our own country, having been able to see what it can look like ‘on the ground’ in another, similar, jurisdiction.
We are now inviting applications from individuals whose paid or voluntary work relates to promoting and encouraging the sustainable development agenda for Northern Ireland. Concordia will provide full funding for successful applicants from within its four composite sectors (Agriculture, Community and Voluntary, Business and Trade Union). However Concordia also welcomes applications from statutory sector representatives who are in a position to meet their own costs (estimated to be around £500 per person).
Successful applicants must be prepared to disseminate widely the results of their learning from this tour in line with the ethos and objectives of the ‘Partnership for Progress’ initiative.
We welcome, in particular, applications from those holding senior positions in relevant organisations, and individuals at an earlier stage in their career with the potential to hold such positions in the future. However, eligibility is not restricted to such individuals. Above all, we want to select a group which will ensure collectively that this tour is of real long-term value in taking the work of sustainable development forward in Northern Ireland.
