Our Young Fit and Active will be delivered in Coleraine, Limavady, Londonderry, and Strabane throughout 2007.
Phab NI Inclusion Matters is encouraging local youth, community, and/or sports organisations in the Northwest to become partners in its delivery in these four locations. The programme aims to impact on the following groups:
The programme targets young people with and without a disability who are currently often excluded from opportunities to engage in physical activity. Young people with a disability experience a lack of provision and difficulties in identifying and accessing such opportunities, and there is no real encouragement for this target group to engage in any programs.
There is also a lack of trained professionals who can deliver inclusive physical activity programmes. The project will therefore create new training opportunities for 20 local volunteers (ie approx. 5 per location) interested in physical activity, based on a solid understanding of disability issues.
Phab NI Inclusion Matters has long established experience and expertise in working with young people with and without a disability together, this work being firmly based on the principles of equity, diversity, interdependence, and social inclusion. As a small organisation in staffing terms, it relies on working in partnership on many fronts, in order to share and disseminate its expertise and knowledge in the most effective manner; the programme will therefore be delivered through partnerships with groups or clubs in 2007 in Coleraine, Limavady, Derry and Strabane.
