‘Enterprising Britain’ is a nationwide Competition to find a place in the UK where enterprise has helped transform a community and led to improved economic prospects for everyone. The Competition aims to identify the town, city, place or area in the country which is best improving economic prospects and encouraging enterprise activities.

The Competition aims to reward the UK’s entrepreneurial spirit and recognise those enterprising places making the UK great today. Last year’s Northern Ireland winner was Irvinestown Trustee Enterprise Company Ltd (ITEC) who received the award for highly commended at the UK final.

Why should you enter?

There are entrepreneurial places, people and projects across Northern Ireland which are making a real difference and contributing to the local enterprise culture through job creation, ensuring long-term sustainability and through attracting inward investment. ‘Enterprising Britain 2008’ is your chance to be recognised for the work you and your teams have carried out to create an enterprising culture and to be rewarded on a local, national and international scale. The competition will be judged by a panel of business experts and the overall national winner will represent the UK at the European Enterprise Awards in November 2008.

Graham Davis, Invest NI’s Director of Regional Economic Development, said:

“The Enterprising Britain competition is a great opportunity for projects which are making a valuable contribution to local economic development across Northern Ireland to be recognised. By highlighting some of the success stories, we can encourage more people to put their entrepreneurial skills into practice and realise their full potential.”

Commenting on the success ITEC Chairperson Pat Monaghan said

“I have often acknowledged that “it took a hundred years for us to become an overnight success! ITEC and our fore fathers Irvinestown Fairs and Market Trustees have been at the forefront of innovative change for almost 100 years, long before corporate responsibility was on the radar. The Trustees were founded by a group of pioneering individuals who believed that it was important to work collectively for the greater good of Irvinestown. That it was not enough to simply look out for number 1, or to consider only the needs of their families and singular denominational groups. They believed they had responsibilities to something greater than themselves and that they must engage with and earn the respect of their entire community. Today in Irvinestown we have a dynamic economic and social industry to be proud of.”

The Northern Ireland Winner will receive a Winner’s Prize Package consisting of:

  • A prize fund of £5000 provided by Invest NI that the winning entry can draw upon to purchase goods or services which will assist in the development of their business project;
  • Northern Ireland and UK wide recognition of its achievements;
  • Nomination to the overall Enterprising Britain Awards;

Who can enter?

‘Enterprising Britain 2008’ is open to all cities, towns, places or areas in the UK which can demonstrate how they have supported and promoted enterprise in the last two years.

Entries will be judged by an independent panel of experts looking for a project which can demonstrate the positive impact this has had on their region through enterprise. For example, this may be anything from a town that has introduced specific ways of reducing unemployment in the area, to an individual project which has gone back to basics and introduced an innovative enterprise strategy to overcome a challenge.
