In the coming months Help the Aged will be embarking upon a campaign to highlight an issue which is profoundly distressing: elder abuse.
Until now, it has been little acknowledged. It will shock many therefore to learn of the sheer scale of the problem. The fact is that thousands of older people are being abused in Northern Ireland every day. The abuse can be physical. It may be psychological. Sometimes it is financial, sexual or comes as a result of neglect. Horrifically, it can take the form of a combination of any of these.
Help the Aged is launching its ‘Stopping Elder Abuse’ campaign in Belfast City Hall, beginning with tea and coffee at 10.30am and ending at 12pm on Monday 30 January 2006.
Those interested in attending should email Kathleen Taylor (Kathleen.Taylor@helptheaged.org.uk) or Pauline Martin (Pauline.Martin@helptheaged.org.uk),
