Colin Glen Forest Park can trace its history as far back as 225 million years with the remnants of time found in the thousands of fossils scattered along the bed of the Colin River. Fossils are the remains of long-dead animals and plants found in rocks of the Earth's crust. Soft tissues usually rot away quickly and so most fossils are of the hard parts, such as bones, teeth and shells.
Following the huge success of last year's event the Colin Glen Trust Dinosaur Walk is back by popular demand this Sunday (17th September). This exciting event allows the public to remove themselves from a modern, urbanised Belfast and travel through time to explore what was a very different Northern Ireland millions of years ago!
Situated on the Stewartstown Road between the two cities of Belfast and Lisburn, Colin Glen Forest Park is a unique green space in a highly urbanised area, with an impressive historical background.
The event kicks off at 11.00am with a brief presentation in the Forest Park Visitor Centre. Participants will then begin a guided walk and talk tour of Colin Glen Forest Park as well as a fossil hunt on the banks of the Colin River.
A fun family event for all. There will be a small charge of £2 per adult and £1 per child which will aid the continued upkeep of Colin Glen Forest Park. Suitable clothing is required; all children must be accompanied by an adult.
